She Walks

January 7, 2012

Joy’s next older sister, Hope, anxious to retain her spot as the youngest in our family, often introduces herself as, “the youngest sister who can walk.”

On Monday afternoon Hope had to change that to, “the youngest sister who can walk without someone holding onto me.”

Ten months after surgery, Joy decided it was time to walk again.

Granted, most children walk about this well, with this much support, before the age of one.

Joy will be five in March.

But as my friend Cori said so beautifully last week, after a while the numbers lose their sting.

It’s not about how far behind they are; it is a matter of how far they’ve come.
