Last night Mercy and I were playing checkers. Call it what you will: She was taking me to the cleaners. I was getting creamed. Whatever.

“Wow,” I commented. “You play like this is chess. You’re guessing the move I’ll make and positioning your checker to capture two of mine even if I jump one of yours.  How do you do it?”

Without any artifice, Mercy answered, “I practice against the computer. And I win.”

That’s my girl :).


Nine is a lovely age in so many ways. Notice the choice of foot ware for the closing ceremony last week at Camp Choson? Mercy is practical: dance exhibition immediately followed by a flying side kick to break a board.
